A flat, disc-like bread roll, traditionally given its appearance by cooking both sides of a ball of soft dough on a very hot plate so that the bread is scorched on either side. Typical ingredients include wheat flour, water, yeast and salt. Vinegar is sometimes added to prevent the muffin from going mouldy.

UK supermarkets sell very few varieties of English muffin and they are sometimes hard to find, but in the US they have become a national favourite and are widely available from bakeries and supermarkets.
Muffins freeze very well, are usually split in half horizontally first, and are often served toasted.
Muffins can be made easily at home with pieces of yeast-risen bread dough, so long as they are left on the frying pan long enough to cook halfway through without burning before being flipped.
